Development of joint ocular dominance and orientation selectivity maps in a correlation-based neural network model
نویسندگان
چکیده
A new correlation-based model for ocular dominance and orientation selectivity columns is proposed. This model can be used to obtain realistic maps for either the ocular dominance maps or orientation selectivity maps. It can also be used to generate joint maps that take into account the extra requirements related to the singularities of the orientation selectivity map and the relative angles of intersection between the contour lines of the two maps. For future research we propose the use of stochastic processes in generating cortical maps and modi1cation of Hebbian cortical interaction terms to make the model more biologically plausible. c © 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. Stable learning of functional maps in self-organizing spiking neural networks with continuous synaptic plasticity
This study describes a spiking model that self-organizes for stable formation and maintenance of orientation and ocular dominance maps in the visual cortex (V1). This self-organization process simulates three development phases: an early experience-independent phase, a late experience-independent phase and a subsequent refinement phase during which experience acts to shape the map properties. T...
متن کاملModeling Joint Development of Ocular Dominance and Orientation Maps in Primary Visual Cortex
We have combined earlier correlation-based models of striate ocular dominance and orientation preference map formation into a joint model. Cortical feature preferences are deened through patterns of synaptic connectivity to LGN cells which develop due to ring correlations of those LGN cells. Model parameters include spatial correlation patterns between ON-and OFF-center cells in separate eye la...
متن کاملCortical Map Development Driven by Spontaneous Retinal Activity Waves
Correlation-based learning (CBL) models have been quite successful when applied to the activity driven development of cortical orientation selectivity (OR) or ocular dominance (OD) maps. We ask under which conditions waves of spontaneous activity as have been observed in the developing retina may provide the proper activity to drive the CBL process. We demonstrate that the currently assumed sta...
متن کاملRules for the cortical map of ocular dominance and orientation columns
Three computational rules are sufficient to generate model cortical maps that simulate the interrelated structure of cortical ocular dominance and orientation columns: a noise input. a spatial band passfilter. and competitive normalization across all feature dimensions. The data of Blasdel from optical imaging experiments reveal cortical map fractures, singularities. and linear zones that are f...
متن کاملJoint maps for orientation, eye, and direction preference in a self-organizing model of V1
Primary visual cortex (V1) contains overlaid feature maps for orientation (OR), motion direction selectivity (DR), and ocular dominance (OD). Neurons in these maps are connected laterally in patchy, long-range patterns that follow the feature preferences. Using the LISSOM model, we show for the first time how realistic laterally connected joint OR/OD/DR maps can self-organize from Hebbian learn...
